Quickstart
From zero to a useful FoodAPI result in under five minutes.
1. Get an API key
Create a free developer account, then generate a sandbox key. Product API calls use the X-API-Key header (or the SDK api_key / apiKey option).
Details: Authentication
2. Install an SDK
pip install foodapi
3. Normalize an ingredient
Turn a raw grocery line into a canonical ingredient — a small, deterministic FoodAPI capability.
from foodapi import FoodAPI
client = FoodAPI(api_key="foodapi_sb_…")
result = client.ingredients.normalize("2 lbs ground beef")
print(result.canonical_name, result.ingredient_id, result.confidence)4. Example response
{
"canonical_name": "ground beef",
"quantity": 2.0,
"unit": "lb",
"confidence": 0.97,
"match_strategy": "alias",
"raw_text": "2 lbs ground beef",
"ingredient_id": "…"
}Fields vary with match quality; use ingredient_id in pantry and reasoning calls.
